William Robert Hay Etching of Trafalgar Square for Auction in Selected Picture Sale on 26th February 2013

Published 22nd February 2013

This etching (EX63/56) has great depth of tone, which explains a GSPE blind stamp that indicates it was exhibited at the Glasgow Society of Painters and Etchers. A pencil inscription confirms this and dates it at 1926. The artist is William Robert Hay [1886-1964]. William Robert Hay was a painter, etcher and lettering artist who as a student won The Kings Prize for Perspective at the Westminster School of Art.

The etching, which is part of a strong group of 20th Century pictures in the selected picture auction to be held on 26th February 2013 at the Okehampton Street Saleroom in Exeter, shows workmen having their lunch at the base of a scaffolding tower close to Trafalgar square. The etching is titled Reconstruction, Trafalgar Square and has an estimate of £80-120.
