Preview of January 2012 Fine Art Auction in Exeter

Published 3rd January 2012

As is usual there is a healthy selection of Chinese porcelain, including mark and period Kangxi (FS13/337) and Guangxu (FS13/338) examples and also a good bronze inlaid censer (FS13/465) and an imposing jade, coral and ivory inlaid hard wood table screen (FS13/437) estimated at £8,000-12,000.

The sale also includes a section of Maritime interest and of note is (Lot 240) Reuben Chappell's oil on board captioned Lewisham of Bideford, Captain J Slade, no doubt a vessel that plied it's trade on both sides of the Bristol Channel, where the products of Cambrian Works at Swansea (Lots FS13/378, FS13/379, FS13/380, FS13/390, FS13/392) or the collection of architypal Welsh love spoons (FS13/409-418) would have been familiar.

There is also on offer the largest selection of clocks and watches we have had for a number of years, the most noteworthy perhaps being the John Ebsworth, 17th century brass lantern clock (FS13/507) retaining its original escape wheel and estimated at £5,000-£7,000.
