An etching by Norman Alfred William Lindsay, entitled 'Thieves Kitchen', which will be auctioned on 31st October 2012.

In the foreground an intoxicated maiden is seduced by a witch, behind her another dishevelled captive is barred escape while more innocents are lured to this Gate of Hell.

The etching is impressive and full of narrative and typical of the work of the Australian artist who was born in 1879 in Victoria to become cartoonist on the Sydney Bulletin. The work of Lindsay delves into illusion, erotica, myth and legend and this Thieves Kitchen represents a lawless hidden ghetto on the outskirts of society. The estimate for this piece of fantasy is £800-£1,200.
