A Pair of 16th Century Italian Thrones in Fine Furniture Auction

Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood are delighted to be offering at auction in the Fine Sale on 30th April 2014 a pair of 16th Century Italian carved giltwood and polychrome decorated thrones by the direction of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral (FS22/974).

The thrones have high panelled backs with arcaded pendant hung canopies of half dodecogonal form, pierced and decorated with scrolling foliage. The polychrome decorated rectangular panels have female figures and birds amidst scrolling foliage and they have panels with coats of arms to either side.

These pieces of continental furniture were given as a gift to Exeter Cathedral by the Reverend Sir Patrick Ferguson Davie Bt, Circa 1960 of Creedy Park, Devon. The thrones are discussed in Charles Tracy's book Continental Church Furniture in England - A Traffic in Piety, pages 138 -139.

The pre-sale estimate is £10,000-£15,000 and they will be offered along with some 150 other lots of fine furniture on 30th April 2014.
